About

Hi, I’m Kirsten and I’m a polymer clay artist specializing in small animal sculptures. I started Quernus Crafts in 2009 after leaving behind a 15 year career in law. Yes, it is quite a career change! You can read more about my journey from lawyer to crafter on the Etsy blog.

Enjoy the day and keep crafting !

How to Start a Pinterest Business Account

I personally adore Pinterest ! I can get lost on it for days, I have so many Pins that if I retired today, I could learn / do  something new each and every day.  Read it over and let me know what you think, I love hearing your comments!

Take care and keep crafting,

Tina

I freely admit I am a Pinterest idiot. After years of having an interest presence, I just got tired of hopping on the next great social media bandwagon. Both my eCommerce and informational website, which I monetized, both performed very well.

But that was back in the early to mid 2000s – things are different now. So I figured it was time to give Pinterest a whirl. This article describes my introductory foray into the exciting world of pinning my arts and crafts information.

Tutorial: Happy Raincloud Mobile from Miss Make

Today was just one of those days, it was 78 humid and cloudy this morning, I got home after physical therapy with all the gusto possible. I even went to 24 Hour Fitness to check out their gym. Thinking once back to work, might as well keep going with all the great excises that my PT has me doing each day. I even took the puppy for a nice long walk.

Alas, I got back home around 10:30, ate a couple hardboiled eggs and thought I would browse the web for just a bit….. well we all know what can happen there huh ?  Looked up, it was 12:30, the clouds had really darkened and I was just ready for a nap… here I am shaking my head and wondering if work has added nap times since I have been off since Jan…. again thinking not… but will cross that bridge when they let me go back … which is hopefully by the end of this month.

Bright spot, found this cool blogger Miss Make and her cuter than anything Happy RainCloud and could not see how this would not be the perfect post with all the strange weather we have had across the USA.

Hope you will pop over and take a look and if you use BlogLovin, add her to your list, I did !!

Take care and keep creating,

Tina

Ballsy, confrontational, resourceful and creative rainbows designed to balance hate with love and peace.

This house has it all. This house made my day.

I agree with Aunt Peaches and if I could do more I would ! To see more on this blog, click Author: PEACHES.

“Fractured Sunset”. by Desiree McCrorey.

This was previously posted on my old blogspot on November 12, 2009, but thought it would be well worth reposting again … thank you again Desiree for sharing this technique !

I was looking over her website gallery and came across her “Fractured Sunset” I was in awe! I had never seen anything so lovely, the way she blended the colors along with the 3d look was a “wow I must know how she did that” kind of moment. I emailed Desiree asking her if she would mind me posting a picture and a little background on how she did this incredible piece.

She replied : “I’m happy to share that technique, but I haven’t tried to repeat it.

It was a slice from a very, very old multicolor cane that probably got just the very slightest bit cured or something. I tried every trick in the book to soften the color gradient cane. And when I thought it was soft enough, I took one slice, placed on top of a layer of well conditioned clay and put it through the pasta machine.

The old cane slice didn’t smoothly stretch; it fractured instead. The back layer did stretch normally and helped keep the fractured layer from disintegrating into a pile of colorful crumbs.

I was disappointed at first, since the top slice didn’t stretch. But after a moment, I kinda liked the effect. After a little more thought I decided to bake it. Then I smeared dark metallic paint over the whole thing and wiped it off the surface, so the paint only stayed in the recessed areas. Then I lightly sanded and carefully buffed the top.

The trick with repeating that technique is I think the fracture-able clay needs to be in a very specific state; somewhere in-between raw and baked. It might take a number of trials to discover what it would take to consistently get clay into the right state where it sort of stretches, sort of fractures.

But you’re welcomed to try! If you have any really old canes (10-15 years old), that might be a good place to start. Good luck.”

Again, what can I say, this woman is the reason us newbies learn and grow ! Thanks Desiree, I will be trying this and hope mine comes out a fraction of the beauty your piece is !
